Pause for Prayer
By Karen Schoeppach
Before Hallmark had its own channel for shows and movies, they would sponsor made-for-television movies a few times a year. Sometimes around a holiday, but at other times as well. I always looked forward to “Hallmark Movies”. They had wonderful stories and were very well written. The actors were often some of the big stars of the day. Although I loved the movies, the Hallmark ads were some of my favorite moments during the two-hour programs. The voice of the man narrating the ad was very distinctive and memorable. Hallmark had a catchphrase that he said in the ads: “When you care enough to send the very best.” Meaning, obviously, if you want to show how much you care, send them a Hallmark card. The very best card on the market in those days.
When family and friends are facing difficult choices, challenging situations, serious health issues, loss, or even times of great joy, we often don’t know what to do or what to say. We search for tasks that will relieve them of a burden. Words and phrases tumble around in our minds. But nothing seems to be just right. That is the time when we should just give it to the Lord. Take a moment and open our hearts and minds to hear God's words. Follow God's lead and guidance. Because, when we care enough, we should send the very best. That is what God gives us.
God, we ask You to help us remember to open ourselves to Your words when we are at a loss as to what to do, what to say. We know if we follow Your guidance, we will be giving “the very best”. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
